The BIG issue with choices

Many times I have talked about our choices; the choice to change towards becoming a better person and the choice to become happier. In this modern world, as human beings we have many choices, in fact, too many for our own good.

Freedom or freewill comes with responsibilities and consequences, I have seen in many cases that this situation causes more uncertainty and more unhappiness than if we would have just fewer choices and we could be content with less.

Taking marriage as a simple example, I would ask many people that are divorced, why did you do it? Many different answers come to place, and without taking away anything from the people that got divorced because of serious reasons, there is a common answer to this massive divorce epidemic: I simply wanted more!

For some reason, we think that the next person would be different, well in fact at the beginning we all are, then if it doesn’t work again what happens? We can choose to leave again and look for someone else because we are able to choose.

Last night on TV, I heard an ex prisoner from North Korea talking about his choices and what freedom meant to him and he said: fried chicken. I was so impressed with his answer that I started thinking how some of us can go through life not only eating any type of chicken but the thousand of choices we do every day: Should I wear pants for work? Should I take my lunch or go eat out? Should I change my job? Should I go out with my friends this weekend? Should I get a new husband?

The choice for this North Korean man was simple, he had none! Once he was able to get out, the word freedom brought the picture of fried chicken to his mind.

What does freedom means to you? What are the consequences of the decisions you take upon your freedom to choose? Have you lost the sensitivity to use your choices responsibly?

Choices are gifts, we received them from life itself, the country we live in, the people that surround us, but choices are also a big responsibility and we should not only think about the consequences but also about the people that are not able to even choose a good meal.

Once again, what does freedom means to you?

For me, it is the world opened to millions of possibilities but also to choose to think before I act and to dedicate the effort I put in controlling my impulses to those that are in need of some good old fashion fried chicken!
